Idris Elba, OBE, is a British actor, producer, musician and DJ. He is known for his dramatic roles on the BBC One Series Luther as well as playing the title role in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Idris portrays the antagonist Macavity in the 2019 Cats movie.

Career (2018)[]

Idris left school in 1988, and won a place in the National Youth Music Theatre thanks to a £1,500 Prince's Trust grant. He first appeared on BBC children's dramas and deejayed nightclubs in his early twenties. He appeared in a 2001 episode of Law & Order and later had a multi-episode arc on the American version of The Office. He starred in the six-part TV series Luther, for which he won a Golden Globe award. Idris first appeared in the film Daddy's Little Girls, playing the lead role, and later joined the casts of Thor, Pacific Rim, and the Dark Tower. He was announced as part of the cast in Cats in October 2018.

  • Idris appeared on the Late Late Show with host James Corden, who portrays Bustopher Jones in the 2019 movie.
  • He hosted the 2016 Met Gala with Cats co-star Taylor Swift. He and Swift also presented the awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song at the 76th Golden Globes in 2019.
  • Idris has been nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film, winning one and was nominated five times for a Primetime Emmy Award.
