Cats shoes are usually split sole leather jazz shoes, painted and customised for the show. As dancers wear through shoes at speed, they are considered semi-disposable items. Authentic shoes get insoles, patched up, but soon enough they are replaced. Consequently, shoes are the most accessible element of the authentic costume for fans and collectors - yes, some people will treasure old, smelly, worn-out stage used shoes!
Different productions treat shoes in different ways, and will adapt to particular performer's requirements. London-based productions usually have the laces replaced with wide elastic, and an elastic strap sewn to the sides. This elastic strap is twisted and worn under the arch of the feet, this holds the shoe and the leg warmer securely in place.
