While the foundation of Cats has remained consistent throughout the years, some major productions have introduced new variations to the score. These changes range from minor lyric changes, adding dialogue, recontextualizing musical numbers, to even entirely new songs. Some of these iterations were short-lived, while others have influenced and been adopted by other major productions, even superseding the original London score.
In general, the show has also been trimmed down for time over the years. Not including intermission, Cats has gone from having a nearly 3 hour running time when it premiered in London in 1981 to most modern productions having a running time of 2 hours and 20 minutes or less.
